The World Disability Darts Association (WDDA) was founded by Russ Strobel, after a campaign to have the lower height board endorsed for wheelchair players. This opens up the sport of darts to players with disabilities. The lower height board (137cm from the bull to the ground) with the same length ochee, was approved by the World Darts Federation brining us a step closer to Darts being a “Sport for All”

Back in 2014 the WDDA had their first WDDA Winmau World Masters Championship through the hard work of Russ Strobel and his partnership with Winmau and the help of the British Darts Organisation. The players who took part in this tournament included Michelle Gabica, Dean Wingate, Ian Gray, Phil Lees, Denis Chadwick and Ricky Chilton. With Ricky Chilton winning the finals and becoming the first ever WDDA Winmau World Masters Champion, and Phil Lees being runner up.

The following year, 2015, the players, Paul Hampton, Darren Kennish, Paul Gelder, Tony Pass,Phil Lees, Ricky Chilton and Andy McEwan went to the Isles of Man to take part in a Disabled Darts tournament. It was their passion for darts and dream of being able to play and encourage other disabled players to join in that resulted in a tournament being held in Birmingham in the summer of 2015. This produced an increased interest and demand in Britain for Disability Darts and British Disability Darts Association (BDDA) was founded in February 2016.

Whilst encouraging those with disabilities to take part and play at all levels, to ensure fair competition in tournaments, the WDDA has set up an impairment classification guideline. This uses the criteria set out by the International Paralympic Association. Classification provides a structure for competition so when competitors in a sport have an impairment that leads to a competitive disadvantage in the sport, this is recognised. The impairment has to significantly affect the players ability to play the sport.

Since 2016 the BDDA has been running tournaments with an annual ranking system in place “The Road to Winmau” for players to qualify for the WDDA Winmau Masters World Championships.

With Disabilty Darts now spreading across the world with players from Belgium, Holland, Germany, France, Denmark, Malta, Hungry, Isles of Man, South Africa, Russia, Mongolia, USA and Newzland as well as Britian have taken part in the first World Cup in Ostend in 2019.

Andy "The Viking" Fordham is the BDDA’s Ambassador helping raise awareness of the BDDA, whose aim is to encourage and support disabled darts players and to pro-actively increasing the number of tournaments available for disabled players in the UK.
